Celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day by having your kids make this DIY painted mug with sharpies. Kids crafts make great Valentine's day gifts as after all there is nothing better than getting a homemade Valentine.
- Elmer's painters sharpie pens (non-toxic)
- Mug (un-glazed works best, but dollar store one works too)
Directions to make a painted mug:To make our painted mugs we bought some mugs from the dollar store and used Elmer's Painters pens to draw a picture and add some writing. We let our mugs dry for a few house and then to set the paint I baked them in the oven for 30 minutes at 400F and then let them cool in the oven until they were cool to the touch. I've hand washed them since and the paint has stayed on so here's hoping that it was enough and the paint will stay on for a very long time. I think these cups would be a great gift for Valentine's day, mother's day, father's day or grandparents day! Who doesn't like homemade gifts?
I wanted to update this post and let all my readers know that the paint on the mugs has chipped a bit over time even with only hand washing. Sealing them with an acrylic sealer should do the trick. My other suggestion would be to make the mugs strictly decorative pieces that only need occasional hand washing. They still make great gifts but just not for everyday use.
